I started Extant Portal after too many years watching mission programs drown in spreadsheets, stale PowerPoint review packages, and requirement management tools priced for primes but usable by almost no one. The methodology was never the problem — SMAD, DoD 5000.02, IEC 62304, NERC CIP all work when a team actually runs them. The problem was the tooling gap: nothing connected requirements, risks, phase gates, and deliverables in one place, for a price a NewSpace startup or a 50-person defense shop could afford.

Extant Portal is that tool. It ships the methodology your regulator expects, out of the box, with the calculators and deliverable templates wired in. Whatever vertical you work in, you spin up your first project and ship a review package in a week — not a quarter.

Methodology-first — pick the one that fits your work

We started with SMAD — the Space Mission Analysis & Design methodology that spacecraft engineers have relied on for decades. Along the way we realized the same lifecycle discipline — concept, architecture, requirements, design, V&V — applies everywhere systems engineering matters.

Today the platform ships five methodology packs: SMAD for aerospace, DoD 5000.02 for defense programs, IEC 62304 + ISO 14971 for medical devices, NERC CIP + IEEE 1547 for energy/grid, and INCOSE V as a domain-neutral baseline. Each pack brings its own phase gates, SysML stencils, starter requirements, and industry-specific calculators — so the tool speaks your vertical's language from day one.

Benefits

Platform Benefits

What you get in the box — across every methodology pack.

Multi-vertical Platform

Five methodology packs ship in the box — SMAD, DoD 5000, IEC 62304, NERC CIP, INCOSE V — each with its own phase gates, stencils, and starter requirements. One platform, every regulated industry.

Requirements Traceability

Build a full RTM linking every requirement to its source, verification method, and closure status — automatically maintained as your project evolves.

Continuous Risk Management

Track risks across all phases with a live 5×5 heatmap, mitigation owners, and burn-down charts that show real risk reduction over time.

Industry-Native Tooling

Aerospace gets orbit + spacecraft sizing calculators. Defense gets DoDAF viewpoints, CMMC, CDRL. Medical gets ISO 14971 hazard file + DHF. Energy gets NERC CIP + IEEE 1547. Your tools match your work.

AI-Powered Requirements

Describe your program objective in plain English and let AI draft a structured set of requirements aligned to your methodology — ready to review and import.

Values

The Principles That Drive Us

Modern systems engineering should feel like a workspace, not a document stack. That conviction drives every design decision.

Engineer Faster, Not Harder

We eliminate the hours spent building and maintaining spreadsheets. Structured modules handle the framework so your team can focus on the engineering decisions that actually matter.

Built on Proven Methodology

Every module follows the methodology your industry actually uses — SMAD, DoD 5000.02, IEC 62304, NERC CIP, or INCOSE V — with the gate criteria, deliverables, and stencils already in place.

Your Mission Data, Protected

Mission data is stored with role-based access control and a full audit trail. Only authorized team members can view or modify your organization’s program information.

One Platform, One Team

Bring engineers, analysts, and program managers together with shared action items, decision logs, and a real-time activity feed that keeps everyone aligned.

Extant Portal is a systems engineering platform with pluggable methodology packs. It started with SMAD (Space Mission Analysis & Design) for aerospace and now also supports DoD 5000.02 for defense programs, IEC 62304 for medical devices, NERC CIP for energy projects, and INCOSE V as a domain-neutral baseline. Structured tools for requirements, risk, phase gates, trade studies, and auto-generated deliverables — from concept through operations.

Sign up for a free account, pick your industry pack (aerospace, defense, medical device, energy, or generic SE), create your first project, and start adding requirements and design parameters. The onboarding wizard walks you through each step.

Describe your project objectives in plain English and Claude AI drafts a structured set of requirements aligned to the active methodology pack — SMAD, DoD 5000, IEC 62304, NERC, or INCOSE V. Generated requirements are ready to review and import.

Yes. Extant Portal auto-generates deliverable document types from your project data — CDRL / SDRL for defense, DHF / risk file for medical, phase review packages for aerospace, interconnection + commissioning reports for energy. Each deliverable exports as a formatted PDF.

Every pack ships with requirements management, risk register, FMEA, trade studies, phase gates, schedule, EVM, V&V matrix, document register, and audit trail. Each vertical pack adds its own domain tools — aerospace: 50+ spacecraft calculators (orbit, mass, power, thermal, ADCS, RF); defense: CMMC tracker, threat model, DoDAF viewer, CDRL manager; medical: hazard analysis, DHF builder, SOUP register, 510(k) predicate search; energy: grid interconnect, reliability roll-up, NERC CIP, substation commissioning.

Yes. All data is encrypted at rest and in transit. Role-based access control ensures only authorized team members can view or modify project data. Air-gapped self-hosted deployments are available for regulated workloads.

Yes. Real-time activity feeds, threaded comments, @mentions, and shared action items keep your entire team aligned.
